The compressive Batt Feed or CBF receives a thick batt of fiber, usually from the web drafter, and feeds it into the preneedle (tacker) loom. It consists of a set of conveyors that compress the batt (shown in red) and then a set of rolls with plastic fingers that guide and further densify the batt as it is fed into the needle zone of the loom. The picture on the left is a Dilo CBF. The gap between the conveyors is adjustable usually 3/4 to 1 inch (19 to 25 mm) and the adjustable gap between the finger rolls can be 1/8 to 3/8 inch (3 to 10 mm). For very heavy feed batts, these openings could even be wider.
Notice that the top finger roll can be raised by air cylinders on each side of the machine. This makes it much easier to clean between the rolls, especially if there is a jam of fiber. The CBF is not actually connected to the loom so it is not affected by vibration from the loom. Usually the CBF is on tracks so it can be moved away from the loom to facilitate cleaning and maintenance of both the CBF and the loom.
