In an uncontrolled crosslapper, the fiber coming out of the crosslapper does not have a uniform weight distribution across the web. It is heavy at the edges. Though the fiber will be stretched in many ways before it reaches the winder, the edges will still be too heavy. We desire to have fabric at the winder that is uni-form in weight all the way across the web. To accomplish this we “profile” the web as it is produced in the crosslapper. This is done by changing the speed of the carriage as it goes across the crosslapper so it distributes a heavier web at the middle of the crosslapper than it does at the edges. This requires sophisti-cated computer controls. Older crosslappers did not have this feature. Some systems tie the card and crosslapper together electronically to very accurately control the profile.
